West Brom have confirmed the appointment of Steve Bruce as their new manager following Valerien Ismael’s dismissal earlier this week.
Ismael was given the boot following a poor run of form which has seen the Baggies drop out of the automatic promotion spots and into sixth, 13 points off current leaders Fulham.
Bruce has been out of work since leaving Newcastle earlier this season and this role will be his 12th gig in management.
BETWIZAD exclusively revealed on Wednesday that Bruce was the favourite for the role, having been identified as Ismael’s potential successor early in the process. He has signed an 18-month contract with the club.
Bruce said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to manage a club that has such great history and tradition. It is a club I obviously know well from my time in the Midlands, and I am already relishing the challenge of taking it forward.
“I did not envisage I would return to management this quickly, but once I got the phone call from Ron [Gourlay], I knew I could not resist the challenge of getting this club back to where they want to be.
“I am coming in with one aim and that is to get Albion to the Premier League.”
Chief executive office Ron Gourlay added: “Promotion remains our objective for this season, and we are confident that with Steve leading the club we have given ourselves every chance of achieving that goal.”
West Brom are not in action this weekend as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton, meaning Bruce’s first game in charge will come next week when they travel to face his former club Sheffield United.
